San Diego Fil-Am Community Survey Project - A Unifying Force

Last April 22, 2016 at Chula Vista High School, Mr. Tony Olaes, Founder of The Filipino School, asked CTFLC (Council  for Teaching Filipino Language and Culture) hand in hand to assist his team to administer the San Diego Filipino-American Community Survey Project, which was  released on May 3, 2016.  The Office of the Philippine Honorary Consul of San Diego Audie de Castro & himself headed this project.  For this to push through, President-Elect Myrna Ablana was designated to steer CTFLC’s participation.

How to Implement Common Core Curriculum State Standards?

By Farah Mendoza For the past couple of years, administrators pushed for the implementation of the California Common Core State Standards (CCCSS).  Some teachers reluctantly joined this new approach of teaching, while other teachers eagerly joined the cause just like me groping into the confusing maze of Common Core Standards.  In spite of all odds, I managed to learn how to implement CCCSS after two years of collaboration with other teachers and professional development.

Balboa Centennial Celebration 2015

On June 5-7, 2015, CTFLC collaborated with Balboa Park Centennial 2015 Philippine American Celebration Committee (PACC).  This three-day celebration happened at Balboa Park Organ Pavilion and the House of Pacific Relations lawn in San Diego.  Filipinos commemorated the relationship between United States and the Philippines.   Plethora of international and local artists such as Martin Nievera, the King of Philippine Pop Music, and Jessica Sanchez, one of “American Idol” grand finalists, performed at this event.  Filipino food, games, and entertainment kept visitors on their toes.

Hornblower Dinner Cruise

Indeed, it was a celebration! Looking back a few weeks, most members of CTFLC were busy tackling grades and preparing for graduation.  In spite of personal hectic schedule, each was able to squeeze in  community participation such as the Balboa Centennial Philippine Independence and Mabuhay Festival 2015 celebrations. On June 14, 2015,  CTFLC unwound and relaxed at Hornblower Cruise Ship.  Thanks to Maria Fontimayor, as well as the CTFLC Social Committee members who meticulously planned and prepared everything.

Mabuhay Festival 2015

Saturday, June 13, 2015, Mabuhay Festival celebrated the 117th Philppine Independence Day.  This event recognized the significance of Filipino leaders and organizations for promoting a better life in the community.  They also have singing contest, beauty pageant, and different community vendors. Mabuhay Scholarship CTFLC facilitated the Mabuhay Scholarship.  The following are the Mabuhay scholarship recipients who received $500 each:

Magkaisa Conference 2015

Students and parents gathered at Sweetwater High School for the 12th Annual Magkaisa Student and Parent Conference. This was held on Saturday, April 18, 2015 from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Ms. Dinnah Donato-Palmore, SUHI Counselor, and Lora Bumatay, Assistant Principal at Granger Junior, chaired this conference.
